Introduction: I realized that I need to introduce this blog a little. I wrote the novel Aksinya: Enchantment and the Daemon. The working title was Daemon, and this was my 21st novel. Over the last year, I gave you the entire novel in installments that included commentary on the writing. In the commentary, in addition to other general information on writing, I explained, how the novel was constructed, the metaphors and symbols in it, the writing techniques and tricks I used, and the way I built the scenes. You can look back through this blog and read the entire novel.
I'm using this novel as an example of how I produce, market, and eventually (we hope) get a novel published. I'll keep you informed along the way.

Here is the list of ideas for advertising--there are more and I'll add to the list as we go along. I'm certainly not an expert in all these, but I've dabbled in all of them. I'll try to relate my experience and the degree of that experience to you.
1. Have a website for your novel.

It wold be too much for me to try to describe how to set up every type of hosting you might be able to do with a URL (.com). I won't try to do that, but I'll give you the general steps and ways to get the work complete.
Your site comes with a site address (a URL) and a name (www.xxxxxxx.com). The name on the Internet is the name you insert in your browser to get to the place where your pages will be posted (you could also put in the address, but that's too hard and unnecessary--don't worry about it). Just like a computer, the data you post is kept in folders and files at the host location. The where doesn't really matter. What matters is having access to that location and posting your files and webpages there.
You transfer files and webpages by editing and saving them in an html editor. I use MS Homepage because I have the program (and I'm cheap), but there are many html editors out there. Word and most of the other MS products can be used to edit html code. I like to use a specialty program because the results tend to be better, but any equipped word processor can do it. A specially program also allows you to get other information like display speed, webpage management etc.
Many companies that host websites also can provide a setup and web editor. You usually have to pay for these services. In general, once you have your website, you have to place the website on the host. This makes a folder at the host location with the name of your website. The host location usually also has other folders for use by the website and the host. If you produce a file labeled index.htm in the folder of your website, any browser will automatically load that file. That is the first page of your website. Subsequent pages are labeled however you want (using typical file labeling rules) with htm as the three letter identifier at the end. These files need to be written in html code to be effectively used by a browser. Like I mentioned, most editors will produce html coded files.
If you really know what you are doing, you can work in the html code. Usually, you will just see the webpage as someone's browser sees it.
