Introduction: I wrote the novel Aksinya: Enchantment and the Daemon.
This was my 21st novel and through this blog, I gave you the entire novel in
installments that included commentary on the writing. In the commentary, in
addition to other general information on writing, I explained, how the novel
was constructed, the metaphors and symbols in it, the writing techniques and
tricks I used, and the way I built the scenes. You can look back through this

I'm using this novel as an example
of how I produce, market, and eventually (we hope) get a novel published. I'll
keep you informed along the way.

The four plus one basic rules I
employ when writing:
1. Don't confuse your readers.
2. Entertain your readers.
3. Ground your readers in the
writing.
4. Don't show (or tell) everything.
4a. Show what can be seen, heard, felt, smelled, and tasted on the stage
of the novel.
5. Immerse yourself in the world of your writing.
All novels have five discrete parts:
1. The initial scene (the
beginning)
2. The rising action
3. The climax
4. The falling action
5. The dénouement
The theme statement
of my 26th novel, working title, Shape, proposed
title, Essie: Enchantment and the Aos Si,
is this: Mrs. Lyons captures a shape-shifting girl in her pantry
and rehabilitates her.
I
just started writing my 27th novel, working title, Claire, potential
title Sorcha: Enchantment and the Curse. This might need some tweaking. The theme statement is something like this:
Claire (Sorcha) Davis accepts Shiggy, a dangerous screw-up, into her Stela
branch of the organization and rehabilitates her.
Here is the cover proposal for Essie:
Enchantment and the Aos Si. Essie is my 26th novel.
The most important scene in any
novel is the initial scene, but eventually, you have to move to the rising
action. I’m editing many of my novels using comments from my primary
reader. I finished editing Children of Light and Darkness and am
now writing on my 27th novel, working title Claire.
I'm
an advocate of using the/a scene input/output method to drive the rising
action--in fact, to write any novel.
Scene development:

elements of the scene)
5. Tension (development of
creative elements to build excitement)
6. Release (climax of creative
elements)

Style
Woah—style
is huge. I just spent more than six
months defining style from almost every angle I could imagine. Here are
the elements I found for an author’s style.

Quick
digression: Back on the tarmac at home.
Scene
based style is moving down into the weeds of the novel. So far, I’ve looked at the higher level style
of the novel itself. Now let’s look at the
elements of style in the writing itself.
The
point in writing every scene is to make the scene entertaining. If it isn’t entertaining, you might as well
not write it. Let’s think about how you
might write a scene to be entertaining.
First, look at my scene development outline. I’ll repeat it here:

3. Scene setting (basic stuff)
4. Creativity (creative
elements of the scene)
5. Tension (development of
creative elements to build excitement)
6.
Release (climax of creative elements)
What
is your style? How do you release the
tension in your scenes? These two
questions have the same answer. Authors
are never limited in their pursuit of tension and release, but the way they approach
both is directly based on their style.
For example, I already told you I write in a conversational style. My style is based on obviously more than
conversation, but to describe it as a conversational style is easy and
correct. There is more to my style. I write about history (predominantly) with a
supernatural tinge. This is also a part
of my style. My characters tend to be
romantic, pathetic, with an internal telic flaw. This is a style. My tension and release development should
reveal each of these elements of style.
I showed you in the discussion of creative elements and scene
development my use of all these elements to build a scene. This happens to be my style and my type of
scene development.
Now,
let’s consider a different type of writing style. What if an author were action based instead
of conversationally based? What if they
wrote in a historically based horror genre?
What if their characters were based on non-romantic, non-pathetic, and
an external telic flaw? Would you expect
their tension and release development to be different than mine? I would expect such an author to use action
and setting for tension development and action for the release. The tension would be horror based. The characters would be gritty and
tough. They would be characters a reader
might like, but not feel sorry for.
Conversation would tend to work with action to develop the scenes, and
the action would not be nuanced.
I
chose a disparate analogue to my style to make a point—the author’s style in
tension and release, and in almost everything should differ based on
style. Style is largely based on the
genre, the focus, and the characters an author develops. There is more, of course. We also expect style to affect many other
aspects of the writing. These are much
more subtle than the elements I mentioned, and much more difficult to easily
express.
