Announcement: There is action on my new novels.  The publisher renamed the series--they are still working on the name.  I provided suggestions as did one of my prepub readers. Now the individual books will be given single names: Leora, Leila, Russia, Lumiere', China, Sveta, and Klava--at least these are some of the suggestions.  They are also working on a single theme for the covers.  I'll keep you updated.

Introduction: I wrote the novel Aksinya: Enchantment and the Daemon. This was my 21st novel and through this blog, I gave you the entire novel in installments that included commentary on the writing. In the commentary, in addition to other general information on writing, I explained, how the novel was constructed, the metaphors and symbols in it, the writing techniques and tricks I used, and the way I built the scenes. I'm using this novel as an example of how I produce, market, and eventually (we hope) get a novel published. I'll keep you informed along the way.

The four plus one basic rules I employ when writing:

1. Don't confuse your readers.
2. Entertain your readers.
3. Ground your readers in the writing.
4. Don't show (or tell) everything.
5. Immerse yourself in the world of your writing.

I am writing about the extrapolation of science and technology to be able to write science fiction.  I made the point that it is almost meaningless to try to fully extrapolate a universe (world) that is 10,000 years in the future (and maybe 1,000 years in the future) without applying some cultural and technological shaping.

By shaping the cultures of your science fiction universe, you can shape the science and technology that is extrapolated.  Here is how I culturally shaped the universe of The Chronicles of the Dragon and the Fox to make the 10,000 year extrapolation work.

The major areas in warfare technology are:
1.  Software
2.  Weapons
     Heavy Weapons
3.  Countermeasures
4.  Defense
5.  Communications
6.  Robots
7.  Vehicles
8.  Environments (personal equipment)
9.  Costs 

Tactical costs are food, fuel, ammo, and replacements.  A great plot device for tactical operations are those with live ordnance and malfunctions.  You can have both regular aircraft (or vehicle) malfunctions or ordnance malfunctions.  I've had both.  Whenever you bring back live stuff that hasn't been expended, you have a problem.  The Navy usually dumps unused live ordnance.  This can be done safely because of the fusing on the weapons. 

Weapons don't go boom unless they are armed.  In an aircraft, the pilot controls the fusing of the weapon through preflight settings and through the employment software (or hardware).  In the good old days, the pilot would simply select the fusing (nose, tail, or none).  This allowed many tactical options including dropping the bomb in  a state where it would not explode--or shouldn't.

I've have a few weapon malfunctions on regular aircraft and some on test aircraft.  The most memorable in a fully tested aircraft was when the rockets came about halfway out on the ground prior to takeoff.  They hadn't been locked properly in the launcher.  From then on, I check the seating of the rockets.  Sometimes it is hard to tell.  Other than that, I've had a flight control malfunction on the ground prior to takeoff with rockets.  I've also had a hydraulic leak--that was fun--with rockets on board.  Lots can go wrong with weapons.

Introduction: I wrote the novel Aksinya: Enchantment and the Daemon. This was my 21st novel and through this blog, I gave you the entire novel in installments that included commentary on the writing. In the commentary, in addition to other general information on writing, I explained, how the novel was constructed, the metaphors and symbols in it, the writing techniques and tricks I used, and the way I built the scenes. I am writing about the extrapolation of science and technology to be able to write science fiction.  I made the point that it is almost meaningless to try to fully extrapolate a universe (world) that is 10,000 years in the future (and maybe 1,000 years in the future) without applying some cultural and technological shaping.

By shaping the cultures of your science fiction universe, you can shape the science and technology that is extrapolated.  Here is how I culturally shaped the universe of The Chronicles of the Dragon and the Fox to make the 10,000 year extrapolation work.

Tactical costs are food, fuel, food, and replacements.  Fuel is a critical need it battle and related directly to the type of power plants in the equipment.  Of similar criticality is the power plants themselves.  I noted this when I discussed the issue with the German jet fighters and bombers.  Equipment in the military and in wartime is of limited life.  You don't want to throw the stuff away, you want to be able to keep it at peak.  It really helps to have a strong engineering knowledge if you intend to delve into this level of extrapolation.  I think it has strong theme and plot ramifications. 

Examples today is the life of the US military's F-100 engine.  The same for any jet or other engine.  An improvement in the engine or the development of a new power plant with a 100% longer life at peak capability would significantly improve the capability to fight.  This is true of most critical technology.  What I mean by critical technology is the technology that makes a military capability possible.  For example, the stealth coatings or design of an aircraft, the engine, the fuel, the weapons, the electronics, the ammo.  These are critical.  Other parts of the system (vehicle or aircraft) might be necessary to operations (critical tactically), but less critical strategically.

Replacement parts and the ability to get them to the field and install/change them are part of the tactical costs.

Military simulation, as I've mentioned, today is based mainly in aircraft and the simulation of aircraft systems, not necessarily combat operations.  There are some combat simulators, I've been in them, and there are some experimental simulators for combat and for other simulations.  The military, like other fields is experimenting and working toward more and more accurate simulations.  Simulations today, in the military, are used for systems training and for experimentation--and that should give you a clue how the simulation business will move. 

Simulations achieved for experimentation means the new products for aircraft systems are simulated, when possible, to determine capability and ease of use.  These simulations will eventually make their way into system simulators.  You have to have the simulators first, so that is a necessary step for any system.  Without a simulator, you will not get your simulation.  Once a simulator is in place, newer simulations will be used to upgrade the simulation.  Because, much of the complexity and capability in new systems, especially aircraft, these new simulations will be operational in nature.  Operational, will move naturally to combat operations.  This is because operational, means to practice combat operations. 

At this stage, much of the simulations done are in the systems themselves--that is, a combat aircraft includes a training mode to allow the pilot to train with the combat system without the risk of dropping a weapon.  These are necessary, but will move to simulators to save the costs of flying an aircraft.  You might also see other, low cost aircraft used as a basis for training.  This will be a great way to save money as operations costs increase.

I thought of a great extrapolation for ground effect vehicles (GEVs).  One of the positive characteristics of GEVs is fuel efficiency.  They gain much greater lift compared to drag in ground effect.  This results in considerable fuel savings.  Couple that with low detectability, speed, and high potential weights and you have a very strong combination of features.  Something that would not be hard to add to GEVs is burst capability.  Burst capability could be speed and altitude based.  In other words, the GEV could be normally a GEV, but act like a regular aircraft when fuel savings wasn't important. 

Here's how a mission might work.  A fighter type GEV formation would infiltrate an area at 400 knots and acquire the targeted facility.  At 10 NM out, the GEV formation would climb to a regular weapon delivery altitude and drop guided bombs on the facility.  The enemy launches fighters against the GEVs and the GEVs go into supersonic mode to attack the fighters.  When the GEVs return to base (RTB) they again us GEV mode to save fuel and to exfiltrate.  How's that for a battle scenario.  The GEV is a very possible flying vehicle until the advent of anti-gravity.

Today's Uninhabited Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are simply stand-ins for human manned aircraft.  They are robots, but not really useful robots.  They don't increase the commander's ability to employ forces, they limit the commander's capability to employ forces.  The kill chain is longer, the potential for collateral damage is greater, the legality under the laws of war are tenuous.  There are a lot of problems with current UAVs, but this is what we have.

The next generation of aircraft-like UAVs will become like the true robots Boston Dynamics is designing for the Army.  The next generation will be true combat UAVs that can operate with aircraft in a synergy that will improve the commander's force employment.  For example, Uninhabited Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs) that work in formation with a human inhabited fighter, bomber, or command and control aircraft.  A formation of a UCAV and a fighter would be able to carry more weapons, employ those weapons, and the UCAV could take on risks so the fighter wouldn't have to.  The UCAV could provide support if the fighter was shot down or had mechanical issues.  In this case, the UCAV would be a true multiplier and not just a human stand-in.

I wish I had a reason to write a novel based on this type of UCAV to human collaboration.  I think it would be a fun novel and a great concept to explore.  Whatever, the future is based in this type of robot to human interaction on the battlefield.  That's just the beginning.

Aircraft and then spacecraft should follow the example of automobiles.  For ground transportation we have: buses, then taxis, then individually owned automobiles.  In aircraft, we have: airlines, then charter, then individually owned aircraft.  Your flying car will just be a variation of the individually owned aircraft.  In spacecraft, expect: spacelines, then charter, then individually owned spacecraft.  Your first thought might be, spacecraft are very complex, expensive, and difficult to fly.  You are right in thinking of spacecraft today, but not those in the future.

Automobiles today are nothing like their ancestors.  By that, I mean, in the past, I could work on an automobile with few problems. Automobiles have become more and more complex to the point that the average and not so average person can't work on them without lots of books, tools, and training.  Aircraft are similar.  All of these inventions come from humble beginnings. 

The flying car (aircraft) will be very simple to operate.  You will put in where you want to go and the GPS will navigate you there.  The car will fly you there.  The system will seem simple, but it will be very complex.  In the future, spacecraft will be as simple to use.  We just aren't there yet.

What about other transportation, like transporters...

You can expect airborne transportation to move to suborbital airline flight while we still have atmospheric airline flight.  The expectation is for the cost of charter and individual atmospheric aviation to reduce and individual aircraft will become simpler to use.  You can expect in at least 100 years your flying car--that is unless the government regulates the capability out of the range of your pocketbook.  You will definitely have your flying car within 1000 years.  The government can't keep a good idea down forever.

From suborbital airline travel we will get orbital and eventually interplanetary travel.  What will these spaceships look like?  Most likely, they will be nothing like we imagine today.  There will be innovations in science and technology that will make space travel much different than we imagine today.  It will not be purely extrapolation, but for science fiction, including hard science fiction, this will be enough.  This is what we call cultural and technological shaping.  The best we can do right now is to extrapolate how we understand space travel to be based on how we understand space travel right now. 

The future of space travel will follow aircraft travel...
