Writing Ideas - Writing Science Fiction, part 92 more Probability Entertainment

31 October 2013, Writing Ideas - Writing Science Fiction, part 92 more Probability Entertainment

Announcement: My novels Sister of Light and Sister of Darkness are about to be published. I write this blog about 2 months prior to its publication. I just heard that the proofs will be here soon--likely before the end of the week. My publisher also wants to put the entire set of novels based on Aegypt on contract--that's 5 more novels for 8 total. They also want to put my other novels on contract. The release schedule should be one novel every 2 months. I'll keep you updated.

Introduction: I wrote the novel Aksinya: Enchantment and the Daemon. This was my 21st novel and through this blog, I gave you the entire novel in installments that included commentary on the writing. In the commentary, in addition to other general information on writing, I explained, how the novel was constructed, the metaphors and symbols in it, the writing techniques and tricks I used, and the way I built the scenes. You can look back through this blog and read the entire novel beginning with http://www.pilotlion.blogspot.com/2010/10/new-novel-part-3-girl-and-demon.html.

I'm using this novel as an example of how I produce, market, and eventually (we hope) get a novel published. I'll keep you informed along the way.
Today's Blog: To see the steps in the publication process, visit my writing website http://www.ldalford.com/ and select "production schedule," you will be sent to http://www.sisteroflight.com/.

The four plus one basic rules I employ when writing:

1. Don't confuse your readers.
2. Entertain your readers.
3. Ground your readers in the writing.
4. Don't show (or tell) everything.
5. Immerse yourself in the world of your writing.

I am writing about the extrapolation of science and technology to be able to write science fiction.  I made the point that it is almost meaningless to try to fully extrapolate a universe (world) that is 10,000 years in the future (and maybe 1,000 years in the future) without applying some cultural and technological shaping.

By shaping the cultures of your science fiction universe, you can shape the science and technology that is extrapolated.  Here is how I culturally shaped the universe of The Chronicles of the Dragon and the Fox to make the 10,000 year extrapolation work.

We don't usually think about the world being governed by probability.  Now probability is very different than luck.  A wise person maximizes probability--you do it unconsciously.  For example, if you want to get a certain job, you go to school, you study for it, you learn everything you can about it, you maximize the chance you will be able to compete for that job.  If you don't get it the first try, you try again until you achieve your goal.  All this is based in probability.  In a roleplaying game and indeed in any computer game, the game simulates real life through probability.  For example, in a tank fighting game.  You must aim the gun at the target.  Their is an inherent probability based on distance that the gun will hit the target.  The better the aim, the higher the probability.  The closer, the higher the probability.  The lower the wind, the higher the probability.  The gamer doesn't see all the math the computer does to calculate the probability of a hit.  The gamer aims and pulls the trigger.  The result is a hit or not.  There is much more to these computations.  The second problem is penetration.  If the round hits, depending on where and how it hits, there is a greater or lesser probability of penetration.  Finally, the results of the penetration.  Depending on where the round penetrated and how it struck the tank affects the last result.  The point is that for every shot, the computer game software makes these computations and determines the results of the event.  This is true of every game and every event.  The world is all about probability, and games simulate this probability through math.  The next part of this is chaos theory.

The real world is based in probability--more tomorrow.

Also remember, I'm trying to show you and give you examples of how to write a science fiction theme statement and turn it into a plot.

It isn't that the world is based in probability that makes gaming so interesting, but rather that because the world is based in probability that game that are also based in probability are more entertaining.  Chess vs. football for example.  People don't understand the probabilistic nature of the world very well at all.  There really isn't any such thing as luck--there is greater or lessor probability.  For example, if you study like crazy, there is no guarantee that you will get a top grade.  You might study the wrong material or not the right things. You might forget key information or misread the questions.  Studying doesn't mean you will get a high grade, but the more you study and the better you study, the higher the probability that you will get a good grade.  In role playing games, this is simulated by the dreaded die-roll.  The game master might give you 10% per hour you study.  If you study for 10 hours, he would still not let you get 100% without some risk.  A proper die roll would be two fifty sided die added together with a modifier or some variant of that kind of roll.  The reason for two dice rolled together and added together is to produce a bell curve.  Everything in real life is based on a bell curve--everything.  In many role playing games three six sided dice are used--these give a great bell curve.  In the real world, your grade is based on a bell curve--you are a single point on the curve, but the more you study, the smarter you are, the better prepared you are, the better the chance you are at the good end of the curve.  Just like a well prepared test will give results on a bell curve, your result will be somewhere on that curve.  This is true about everything in the world.  Everything is on a bell curve.

The real world is based in probability--more tomorrow.

Board gaming began the gaming craze, but the ability to first, put very complex games into computers and to play against the computer and second, the ability to create role playing worlds in a computer game moved into the true individualization of entertainment.  In books, books with more than one ending or with multiple paths were also popular, but they haven't taken off like first person gaming has.

In first person gaming, the player is creating his or her own entertainment.  The world and the potential endings or plot has been developed by the author, but the player gets to the end by skill and probability.  The point of skill and probability can't be overlooked.  Chess is a pure skill game.  Monopoly is really a probability (luck) based game.  The mix of probability and skill is very similar to the way the real world works.  This is not so much luck based, but odds based.

The real world is based in probability and skill--more tomorrow.

Board war gaming began the individualization of entertainment especially in gaming.  I'll get to how war gaming began to shape the next level of gaming in computers, but another invention in gaming came directly out of war gaming.  Role playing was developed by scale model war gamers for the purpose of replaying the Lord of the Rings novels.  They achieved something more spectacular.  Role playing allows a person to participate in and develop a story themselves and with others.  This is individualized entertainment beginning to be perfected.

Role playing took off with board war gaming.  The next step was the advent of war gaming and role playing in computer gaming.  In fact, the first serious computer games were war games.  I'm writing about the UNIVAC computers.  The first real game of note was a huge war game.  The computer played one side and the player the other.  It can be found for more modern computers and was akin to Civilization (the game).

The individualization of entertainment means not just that you can see the entertainment when and where you wish it, but rather ultimately, it means you can make entertainment yourself.  Ultimately, the point of human entertainment is self directed.  I put to you as an example games.  Board games started as a simple way to while away the time.  They were probability based but allowed the players to have some feeling of accomplishment in spite of actually doing nothing.  That is really the ultimate of entertainment.  It isn't the total goal we would wish for entertainment, but it is an extreme.  Board games became in the 1970s the ability to reproduce warfare.  The ability to simulate a past, present, or future event has been a human desire--the ability to do so in an entertaining format was a great leap of invention.  Most of these war games were based in war game theory the military practiced to a limited degree.  In fact, the military learned a lot from the war game development in the 1970s.

The advent of computers and computer gaming had a more dramatic influence on this mode of entertainment.

John Brunner in Stand on Zanzibar postulated about Mr. and Mrs. Everywhere.  Mr. and Mrs. Everywhere was a host of TV (remember not entertainment) programs where a set top box would overlay the viewer's faces, voices, and personalities over those of the actors and the viewers could then seem to directly interact in the programs.  The programs were no longer vicariously about the viewers, but really about the viewers.  This is the individualization of entertainment at the most basic level.

In general, people individualize entertainment when they read a book--they may place themselves vicariously in the place of the characters, but even more, the world of the novel comes out of their imagination along with the authors descriptions.  What if you could individualize all forms of entertainment?

Where is entertainment going--obviously entertainment is falling more and more into the hands of the entertained.  Just so you understand that the purpose of TV and radio is not to entertain, we can more on with extrapolation.  Notice that the entertainment sphere is still firmly entrenched in the concept of the play or extravaganza.  People watch sports, go to plays, musicals, and opera, go to musical presentations, etc. for entertainment.  They have taken more and more control of these types of entertainment.  The point for the individual is to get the entertainment she wants when she wants it.  Thus, if I have a recording of a play, I can see it whenever I want, but not necessarily where ever I want.  If I have access to the streaming of the recording, I can see it whenever and almost where ever I want.  Connections in the sphere of communications make it possible for me to have the entertainment I want when and where I want it.  The control of the entertainment access becomes individual.  What about the entertainment itself?

Bioenergy and bioimplants are not that far away--I estimate from 100 to 1000 years.  There are already nonworking bioimplants.  The steps to human nerve connection can't be that far away.  Still communications are both mundane and sensational.  People will likely still want to share a movie together--will they use Google glass or a large format TV, projector, movie theater.  We will loose a great part of our culture if we loose movie theaters--so who knows where that form of entertainment will go.  And that is the next topic we will extrapolate--entertainment.  Communications move naturally to entertainment although TV and radio, for example are not entertainment media.  TV and radio are marketing devices and not about entertainment.  The point of the entertainment is to keep you listening to the commercials.  Commercials pay for the radio and the TV.  This isn't bad, but people need to understand the purpose, and it isn't entertainment.

What happens when I take communications to the next level?  I mentioned Google contacts and ear inserts.  What if I could inject a Google glass into your cornea.  How about permanent ear inserts in your ear drum.  Already there are cochlear implants.  What if I gave everyone cochlear implants for a personal sound system.  How far is this from stimulating the aural nerve directly.  What about stimulating the optic nerve directly?  If I implanted a device in you for sound, optics, a control head, and powered it with bio energy, you would have a permanent system within your body.

Take this a step further.  So you won't need updates of the implants every year, I could make standard implants and update the software and hardware controlling it every cycle.  The controlling device might be something you put in your pocket or attach physically with a connection.  It might be like a drug patch.  Perhaps you implants will all connect to a patch of skin with a connection array on it.  Make sure all the pins align when you get your upgrade.

You can see already the makings of a science fiction novel.

Also remember, I'm trying to show you and give you examples of how to write a science fiction theme statement and turn it into a plot.

What will communications look like in the future.  Right now we are seeing the integration of wearable devices.  Dick Tracy's watch is about to come to your wrist.  This integrates communication to a fixed device.  Since cell phones are already taking over as clocks, address books, note takers, music devices, books, video devices, etc. the future is pretty easy to see.

The next step in wearable devices is the Google glass (or facsimile).  From wearable integration, we are moving to sense enhancement.  Eyes that can see, record, and report things that are not otherwise in sight is the visual part of Google glass.  Hearing will fit in the Google glass headphones--again, this is hearing what is not currently in the environment.  Finally, speaking.  With seeing, hearing, and speaking, I can have a complete communications device that is fully integrated to the human and yet that is wearable.

The next step will be wearable devices that are more fully integrated in the human bio system.  Can you say Google contacts with ear inserts.  The next level is fully biological.

Communications have moved in a very unexpected and yet predictable fashion.  Communication systems have almost always taken advantage of new technology faster than other systems.  So, we saw the telephone and the telegram before electricity was common or used for any thing else.  Phone systems and telegraph systems took almost immediate advantage of computers and multiplexing.  Phones were computerized before almost anything else.  When the battery, computer, and wireless technology reached the appropriate level, we saw initial cellular phone capability that with technology became more and more inexpensive and available.  The resulting wireless phones are an astounding capability.  The future for devices is tied to computers and the future of communications and computers is tied to medicine.

Let's extrapolate communications.  Can you imagine how far we've come in 100 years.  Dick Tracy was talking into his wristwatch and no one imagined it was science fiction.  At the turn of the 20th Century phones were being erected across the nation.  Telegrams were the main means of long range communications.  Today, telegrams are gone, but texting has become one of the main means of communication.  We have moved in very unusual ways.  Usually voice communication are the preferred means of communication.  In the 21st Century, texting and email has temporarily superseded voice communication.  This is unexpected and interesting.  We are also seeing text communication moving toward visual--it is common to use pictures and soon videos as communications.  Perhaps we will see video become the preferred means of communication.  If so, it much become more simple to use and load.  More tomorrow.

I used cultural and technological shaping with FTL (and other technologies) in The Ghost Ship Chronicles and The Chronicles of the Dragon and the Fox.  In addition, if you noted, I left myself an opening for the next series of novels.  In the first series, the astrogator programed the entry and exit to null space and there was great risk to the ships because they couldn't maneuver in null space.  In the second series, the astrogator had to program the entry and exit from the initial null space entry, but the ship could look ahead during shutter and maneuver around gravity wells and detect derelict ships (a key point in Ghost Ship).  In the potential third series, the ships will be more advanced and require less astrogation.  I don't have any inspiration for this future series, but I'm sure it will come to me in time.  Right now, I still have to finish the last of Ghost Ship and I am writing a really fun novel about a Greek Fox Spirit.  If you say, you can't imagine a novel about a Greek Fox Spirit--good, themes must be unique and unusual, or they won't sell.

In The Ghost Ship Chronicles I go into detail about the FTL drives and the operations of the systems.  In The Chronicles of the Dragon and the Fox, it is extremely dangerous to move a ship in Null space near a gravity well--based on the theory of the FTL systems I develop.  The characters of Dragon and Fox use this risk to bring their ships more quickly into battle and turn the tide against the Imperial forces.  In Ghost Ship the method of FTL is shutter drives that bring the ship in and out of null space every minute or so.  In Ghost Ship, the limit is that the astrogator has to set up the initial entry into null and the exit from null space.  This works great for technological and cultural shaping.  In other words, I technologically shaped the FTL systems to match the theme and plot of the novels.  Culturally, the operations for space have created a process or education for astrogation.  In Ghost Ship, I show you that whole education system.  The Ghost Ship novels are really fun to read--I like discovery novels where people discover their full capabilities in the novel.

Since the speed of light is a limit, you need to discover a means to move within the galaxy that doesn't depend on the speed of light.  In my novels, I progress from FTL that is a single transition in null space to systems that shutter in and out of null space.  In the universe of The Chronicles of the Dragon and the Fox and The Ghost Ship Chronicles, the method of FTL is through null space.  Null space is the straight line distance between systems.  The assumption is that null space allows travel through the gravity waves that fold space.  The Chronicles don't go into as much detail on the operations as the mechanism.  Ghost Ship goes in depth about the operations and not so much the mechanism.  Null space allows relatively quick travel between solar systems.  In Ghost Ship, the travel has progressed to shutter null drive.  The ships move in and out of null space at specific intervals.  In both series, the transition through null space requires special training and individuals.  In Ghost Ship, I go into detail on the methods and training.

If you are moving inter-solar system relatively quickly, for your universe, you need to develop some means of FTL.  The means needs to fit some known or unknown extrapolation.  Warp drive won't cut it.

Also remember, I'm trying to show you and give you examples of how to write a science fiction theme statement and turn it into a plot.

When we are talking about 1,000 o 10,000 years in the future, we can extrapolate the possibility of FTL travel.  The methods can be varied, but they are generally based on the same concept--gravity folds.  Science fiction writers have proposed various methods to get around the limits of the speed of light.  If you don't know that the speed of light is a physical limit, then you really need to get studying.  In the 100 to 1,000 year extrapolation, it can be expected that travel between solar systems is difficult and accomplished at non-FTL speeds.  This means it will take about 5 years at near light speed to get to the closest solar system (from earth).  A portion of the travel will be accelerating out to near light speed and decelerating back from near light speed.  You need to do the math yourself--it isn't difficult.  If you can't do the math, you really shouldn't be writing science fiction.

There are various methods of FTL travel that have been suggested.  I'll get to that tomorrow.

Also remember, I'm trying to show you and give you examples of how to write a science fiction theme statement and turn it into a plot.

If you want to get anywhere in the universe, you need some method of moving Faster than Light (FTL).  In extrapolating science we can see means of non-FTL transportation.  The most obvious are those that have worked in our solar system--hydrogen/oxygen rocket engines.  There are many others such as solar sails, fusion acceleration, fission acceleration, electromechanical, photon, particle acceleration, there are more and more to be discovered.  If you are working in the intra-solar system regime and 100 to 1000 years in the future, you will want to explore these methods.  You will also want to apply complete orbital dynamics to your universe.  In a universe where fuel for movement isn't a big deal, the orbital dynamics should be less of a problem.  In any case, if you are moving around in space and from a planetary surface into space, you need an understanding of orbital dynamics, gravity, and atmospherics.  You basically need to understand what it takes to get into space, achieve orbit, and return to a planetary surface.  Start studying.

The trick is what to do when you move more than 1,000 years into the future.

There are still other areas of extrapolation to exploit.

More tomorrow.

Also remember, I'm trying to show you and give you examples of how to write a science fiction theme statement and turn it into a plot.
